Image SEO Optimization Best Practices

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the process of improving your website’s visibility to the outside world. There are a number of ways to improve your website by publishing relevant and authoritative content, updating your website, linking to outbound links, and optimizing your images!

Did you know that your photos have their own SEO you can utilize to improve how they interact with your website? Image optimization is important because it helps your photos rank in the image section of search engines and also contributes to your overall SEO score.

Here are a few ways to optimize your image SEO:

  • Image format

There are two formats typically used on websites: JPG and PNG. It is best to think about it as saving photos as JPGs and saving your logos, icons, and graphics as PNGs.

  • File size

The optimal file size for your images is no more than 200KB. For most images a max-width of 800 pixels is best! Did you know that page load time is a factor in your SEO score? If you keep your images to this size then it will help them load properly and timely on computer and mobile devices.

  • Alt Tags

When you upload your image to your site, you have the option to tell your website what is in that image. This is an alt tag, and it helps search engines distinguish where the image needs to be.
