What to Look For in Good Design

What to Look for in Good Design

Let’s face it, a lot of people have different styles and tastes when it comes to design. The term “good design” can actually be pretty broad depending on who you ask! So let’s break down what to look for in good design.

It takes 2.6 seconds for someone’s eyes to land on the area of a website that most influences their first impression. That can be said for many other types of design too! So what is good design?

Good design increases readability, communicates what you want quickly, and draws your audience to key information. You only have 2.6 seconds to grab someone’s attention, so you have to be clear with your message.

Here are some key points to consider when designing:

Color

Color can be used to define importance as well as unify branding. You always want your designs to be cohesive with the rest of your brand. If you have too many competing colors, it can become confusing to your target audience on the message you are trying to convey.

Size

Hierarchy is important! In design, size is used to show importance, attract attention and create contrast. If multiple words or pieces of information are the same size, it can confuse the viewer as to what is the most important thing they should look at.

Space

Space is the area around the elements in a design. It can be used to separate or group important information. Think of space as proper punctuation in a sentence. You use commas and periods to separate sentences to give your mind a break to process information. Space is used just like this, to give your brain time to process information!

Clear Objective

Make sure your design speaks clearly. You want your main information to be very easy to find so you get more payoff from it! If the message isn’t clear, it’s possible that your viewers are scrolling past it and on to the next thing.

Keep it Simple

If you have too much information or visual interest in a design, it can be overwhelming to your viewer. For example, in a social media post, you don’t want to include large paragraphs in a graphic, you only want to use key information to grab the viewer’s attention, and lead them to read your caption that can include the bulk of the information.

At the end of the day, good design can make or break your business! All of the concepts above combined together will give you a better chance to grab your audience and lead to more sales!
